It was quite a task to follow the scripts when we were reading them, because it was so out there and so all over the place and how are we going to get back from this? It was enjoyable just reading the scripts.įanSided: But it’s not just TV where we’re seeing you. I loved the fact that I got to play someone so outlandish, very much like a Princess Bride on steroids kind of level, so for me it was definitely a blast. He’s amazing on set, he’s such a great leader, and everyone was right on point and I think it’s because of the storytelling and the writing. How did that experience compare?ĪP: Max Landis is a phenomenal writer. It’s been a surprise the whole way, and it’s something that I don’t usually get to play, so I’ve been very fortunate.įanSided: Van Helsing‘s a crazy show, but then you also appeared in Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency season 2, which is a whole other kind of crazy. I honestly think he’s up there at number on,e because I got to play a guy that was extremely evil and angry in the first season and try to figure him out - with his search for power and blood and being number one - and then the switch, when he gets bitten and he’s this compassionate, redemption-seeking human. To see what the path would look like.įanSided: You’re no stranger to playing villains and antagonists over your career, so how does Van Helsing compare to some of those past roles?ĪP: He ranks right up there. But I would love to see Julius complete his redemption. The cast and crew and the creators, everyone has been so phenomenal, so as of now, everything is bonus for me. I would love to see him stick around, obviously, because I’m having such a great time with the story and being a part of the show. If I happen to get killed off, I’ve been really blessed to be a part of the show. (laughs) Literally the whole first season he did that and the second season. He always walks by me every four or five days and goes, “You know what, I don’t remember but I think you might be getting killed off next episode,” and I’m like what? And he’s like I don’t remember, I could be wrong.
It’s one of the jokes on set with our showrunner. It’s definitely emotional, and my mom stuff, I’m a bit of a mama’s boy, so that helps with the character building!įanSided: We’ve seen some of that redemption this season, but considering everything he’s done, do you think he can ever be completely redeemed? Or could it catch up with him and he could even get killed off?ĪP: Definitely. It helped me not only be so dedicated to why Julius was the way he is in a very authentic way, but it also helped with the redemption aspect of how Julius is going into the second season, with how he can redeem himself and make the world a better place now, knowing what he’s done as a vampire. It was not necessarily written, but I developed my own backstory and I shared it with the creators, and they took little branches of that and put it into their season. I needed some roots and why Julius was the way he was in the first season. This season for me, I needed to get grounded. So what is it like just to live in his head this season, when it’s so different?ĪP: There’s a lot of emotionality. That’s why he’s got this anger in him and I love shooting that.įanSided: That’s the thing the Julius we first met was a very angry, dark character. I loved where people got to go back to see his mom. Is there anything from the season so far that’s been a particular highlight for you?Īleks Paunovic (AP): I love my origin story in episode 3, where I got to be in 1936 and you get to see me be very emotional with my mother and trying to keep her in the hospital, so I try to get some money. on Syfy.įanSided: We’ve gotten to know Julius more in Van Helsing season 2.
